HP Takes Steps To Recycle Ink Cartridges

Tue 08-Dec-2009 02:13 | Hewlett-Packard, a worldwide leader in the printer market, knows how important it is to offer products which use fewer natural resources and are more eco-friendly. The company started the trend back in the 1970s, long before living a “greener” lifestyle was considered as important as it is today. The company has strong programs to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and is the first major IT company to report GHG emissions associated with its supply chain. It has also made an effort to remove toxic substances from its products. For these reasons, Newsweek magazine has named it the greenest company in America.

The company’s latest campaign strives to recycle as much as possible from ink printer cartridges, something that will save both resources and money in the long run. HP set a goal in 2009 to triple its use of recycled materials and this is a goal which they have already achieved. The full implementation of ink cartridge recycling should push them even further along their goal.

When ink cartridges are recycled, the empty cartridges are first sorted into categories and then shredded. The largest components of the shredding include the plastic of the cartridge itself and the ink sponge inside. The sponge itself will be saved along with the plastic, which will be sent for refinement in a recycling plant. The new cartridges which are produced out of these materials contain 75% recycled material and can be reused up to 7 times with full reliability.
