Tue 11-Nov-2008 14:20 | When we talk about printers, we normally divide them into two groups: laser printers and inkjet printers. One of the disadvantages of both of these printer types is the waste from spent cartridges. There is an interesting 're-invented' technology, though, that might be of interest to you-- solid ink.
This technology utilizes solid ink sticks. The ink stick is melted and used to produce images on paper. The manufacturer (Xerox) claims that solid ink printing produces more vibrant colors than other methods, and is more environmentally friendly due to reduced waste output. The sticks are non-toxic and safe to handle.
Current solid ink office machines are the Xerox Phaser 8560 and 8860 color printers, and the Xerox Phaser 8560MFP and 8860MFP color multifunction printers.
As in almost any situation, there are some disadvantages of current solid ink technology, including the warm up times, higher power consumption, odors, and print longevity issues.
