Hewlett-Packard Removes Ink From Recycled Paper

Hewlett-Packard Removes Ink From Recycled Paper

Tue 20-Oct-2009 21:01 | With the eye of the world focused on the environment and making changes in the way recycling is conducted, Hewlett-Packard believes they have discovered a two-step process to remove ink from recycled paper. Most recycled paper on the market today has spots and blemishes due to the fact that it is very hard to separate ink from paper. However, HP is striving to make advancements in technology and science in order to remove hand-applied ink and printer ink from paper that is sent off for recycling.

This two-step process is very simple, and was developed by HP Labs, the research arm of the computing company. The first step is to use ethoxylated fatty alcohol which is added to a vat of pulped paper that is being recycled. Ethoxylated fatty alcohol will remove the printer ink from the paper, separating it completely. Next, anionic surfactants are added to the vat. These surfactants actually absorb and collect the ink bubbles that will form when it is separated from the paper. It is the removal of these ink bubbles that has given rise to problems in the recycling process.

Hou Ng, an HP Labs researcher spoke in a prepared statement, “It gives us a universal de-inking chemistry that caters to digital commercial prints and inkjet dye-based ink. Our most recent data shows that we were able to use this de-inking chemistry for offset media, like newsprint, which is one of the hardest media to de-ink.”
